Quick Question #1

What makes a superhero?

Kristen from Metaphors and Moonlight left a comment on my Gwenpool #0-5 post that prompted this question. She said, "I have to admit I'm not so much interested (in) the superhero ones..."

When I responded to her comment I said, "TMNT isn't really about superheroes, just turtles with ninja skills, lol." J was sitting next to me on the couch (reading Daredevil) and told me I was wrong. He was very adamant about the Ninja Turtles being superheroes.

What is the criteria for being a superhero? Do you have to save the world? Is there a difference between a hero and a superhero? Daredevil and Black Widow prove that you don't need special powers, so what is it?

  1. I guess I would say a hero is anyone who is willing to put their safety at risk to help others while a superhero is the same with superpowers?? Maybe...lol

I don't think I would have thought of the TMNT as superheroes because...turtles lol but yeah, I guess they are.

    1. Daredevil, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Iron Man--all considered superheroes, but have no superpowers. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur--she's super smart, a superhero, but has no powers. I'm having such a hard time with this! Lol. It's been on my mind lately as I read through different comics.

    2. It never occurred to me until J and I started debating whether or not the turtles were superheroes or just mutants that repeatedly save their city.

    3. I don't really read or watch much in the way of superhero comics so I'm probably the last person to ask.

Maybe I need to consult Kevin on this one. lol

    4. So I investigated...This is from Stan Lee

"A superhero is a person who does heroic deeds and has the ability to do them in a way that a normal person couldn’t. So in order to be a superhero, you need a power that is more exceptional than any power a normal human being could possess, and you need to use that power to accomplish good deeds"

But Wikipedia defines it as "A superhero (sometimes rendered super-hero or super hero) is a type of heroic stock character who possesses supernatural or superhuman powers and who is dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the public, and usually battling supervillains." but gives a little more wiggle room to including people(or turtles lol) without powers at times. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superhero

    5. Lol! Thank you for investigating! I think we should go with Stan Lee's definition. If we do, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be considered superheroes, and it explains most everything else. 😁

  2. I think you can't go wrong with Stan Lee's explanation. :) And yeah I don't know much about TMNT but I would consider them superheroes too. It's just one of those things ha ha.

    1. I've decided to no longer question the ways of comic books, and just go with the flow(s)...
